Last year the
Senior Citizen's Club of Leicester collected used cell phones for the troops
serving overseas. Each phone was used to purchase sixty minutes of air time
so the troops could call home with no charge to them. The project is ongoing
and recently the Superintendent of Schools, Paul Soojian, has approved boxes
in each of the schools for the phones that are donated by the students. In
addition to the phones, several boxes of various items were sent to Iraq.
Mary O'Brien's granddaughter who was serving there came to one of the Club's
meetings and told us how much the troops appreciated the boxes. This year a
new project has developed. A marine serving in Iraq had asked his mom to
send some items that the troops really needed and he also requested 40 of
each so everyone in his unit would receive something. Adam never got to see
what he had requested as he was killed five days later. His mother began a
project in Adam's memory--The Adam Conboy Memorial Fund was established in
Philadelphia. They have collected many items and prepare boxes for the
troops. Their only request is a tax deductible donation of twenty dollars
which includes all the contents of the box which also includes shipping.
They also ask that you give your name and address to be put on a label that
will be put in the cover of each box so the troops will know who it came
from and they also suggest a note of support or of good will. Should you
want to donate to this cause, contact Create a
