Who is the Recycling Committee?
The Leicester Recycling Center is staffed by volunteers and members of regional youth programs.
Through our youth program, we have many youths gaining work experience, earning scout badges, earning high school credits, or completing community service. All youths participate in supervised work parties hand in hand with Recycling Volunteers.
The Recycling Center opened in February 1992, about a month after the Town Landfill was closed. It was started and organized by a group of dedicated and concerned citizens, spearheaded by Ruth Kaminski. It has continued to operate with no paid staff. From 1992 to 1999, no town money was used to operate the recycling center. In fiscal year 2000, the first operating budget involving town money was put in place. Today, the Recycling Center has an annual budget of approximately $16,000. Of this amount, about $7000 to $8000 is from income produced directly from operation of the recycling center.
It has been estimated that municipal departments would need to increase their operating budgets by about $6000 if the Recycling Center stopped operations to process that which is currently recycled at the Recycling Center in bulk quantity.
Through the work of the dedicated volunteers and youth, we are able to offer you a way to keep your trash disposal costs down and our environment cleaner. If you recycle and purchase with recycling in mind you can pay as little as $96 a year for trash removal costs. For more information, call 508-892-3121.
